PLANNING FOR SPECIAL ENVIRONMENTS
Michael Schimek has a long personal record in managing a World Heritage site and in planning and implementing spatial strategies and concepts.
A special focus lies on protected areas and, connected with that, the duty to refrain from overexploitation and to strive for highest quality - in managing the World Heritage and European Diploma for Protected Area cultural landscape Wachau in Austria, in redeveloping Jauerling-Wachau Nature Park, but also exchanging with other similar regions and sites.
The key areas of work are World Heritage compatibility, townscape, landscape and monument protection work, nature protection, arts and culture, sustainable tourism and regional development in general.
Schimek plant develops:
- Management plans for World Heritage sites and other protected areas,
- feasibilities for potential World Heritage sites,
- nomination dossiers for new World Heritage proposals,
- World Heritage compatibility expert statements and Heritage Impact Assessments (HIAs),

LIVELY and target group-oriented
my expert input for your event
Michael Schimek advises organisations in Austria and abroad in developing their capacities. A special focus lay on supporting the building-up of sustainable regional development institutions in some of the new members states of the EU.
Above that, he was invited to a huge number of expert meetings and conferences during the last years and organised excursions on regional development and the World Heritage in Austria and abroad. From 2009 to 2018, Michael Schimek taught future World Heritage experts studying "World Heritage Studies" at Brandenburg Technical University in Cottbus.
Schimek plant delivers lectures and organizes workshops:
- On the World Heritage, on integrated strategies and concepts, on objectives and how to (or even not to) achieve them,
- on regional development, EU programmes, stakeholder involvement, project management and financing,
- on management in general, on important skills when collaborating with municipalities and regions, on ways of planning and implementing.
